Generators: What Homeowners Need to Know

Table of Contents

Generator for Power OutageWhen an ice storm strikes, or a blizzard blows in, it’s likely that parts of the Kansas City metro and surrounding areas will lose power. When that happens and your home is left without power, how do you plan on keeping warm and out of the dark? If you have a fireplace maybe that’s enough for you, but for many homeowners, a fireplace is not a luxury they have. That’s where generators can come in handy. Generators aren’t just for tailgates and outdoor parties. Fusion Electric explains everything you need to know about them to help you decide what type of generator is right for your home.

The Two Types of Generators

  • Portable Generators: These are a temporary power solution and runs on unleaded gasoline. They consume about 8-12 gallons of fuel a day when operated. Thanks to their portability , these are great during bad weather or short-term electricity outages. They also cost less than an installed generator in your home. However, don’t wait until the next emergency to buy a portable generator. Take the time to prepare for an emergency now.
  • Installed Home Generators: Professionally installed home generators are becoming increasingly more popular in our area. These are permanent and run on natural gas or liquid propane. They allow your home to have power for longer, and without you having to haul heavy equipment. Now you can even choose added features, like technology that allows you to control the generator with your mobile phone or other Internet-enabled device, auto-start functions, a transfer switch, and maintenance features such as automatic weekly system tests to ensure the engine is always ready to go. Installing a permanent generator is a long-term investment, which can increase your property’s value.

Which One Is Right For You?

The type of generator you pick for your home will depend on a few things as well as personal preference. Ask yourself a few questions; Will you be running your whole house off the generator, or just a few items like the refrigerator? Are you prepared to start and maintain a generator yourself, or would you prefer automated features? What’s your budget? How much space do you have available for a generator?

Generator Safety

Whichever generator you decide is the best fit for your home, always remember to use caution when operating yours.

  • If you are using a portable generator, be sure never to overfill it. Always leave about a half-inch of open space in the fuel tank for expansion.
  • For either a portable or installed generator, don’t use 100 percent of the generator’s capacity. This will prevent tripping the generator’s circuit breaker, or overheating your appliances.
  • Always be aware of where you place your generator when in use. One portable generator can create more than 100 times the amount of carbon monoxide as a running car. Carbon monoxide is odorless, colorless, and potentially lethal. Keep the generator a safe distance away from the home, taking into account open windows or intakes. Also, be aware of wind conditions that can change the direction of the exhaust. Never run a generator indoors, even in an open garage. Use carbon monoxide detectors throughout your home to alert you to the presence of carbon monoxide.
