Table of Contents

When it gets cold outside, you may be looking for a way to stay cozy and warm inside. While an electric blanket can help to keep you warm at night, it’s important to keep in mind that it runs on electricity. This means that you need to have the attitude of “safety first” when you are using any type of electricity. If you want to stay safe while you are using an electric blanket this year, be sure to adhere to the do’s and don’ts found here.

DO Use a UL Rated Blanket

When choosing an electrical blanket, make sure that it conforms to standards created by Underwriters Laboratories (UL). This is a safety certification organization that has been in the business of testing products for over a century.

DON’T Allow Toddlers, Infants of People with Disabilities to Use these Blankets

If a person is unable to operate the temperature control on their own, they should not use an electric blanket. This rules out toddlers, infants and anyone with a disability.

DO Keep the Blanket Flat

While you may be tempted to fold the blanket, or even ball it up, this isn’t a good idea. To ensure it doesn’t get too hot, you should keep the blanket spread out flat.

DON’T Use the Blanket All Night

When it comes to using an electric blanket for warmth, you should not try to use it all night. The only exception to this rule is if you have purchased a blanket that has been rated to be used throughout the night.

DO Keep the Blanket on Top of You

You should always keep your electric blanket on top of you. Don’t ever put it under you. This can cause damage to its internal coils. Also, make sure that you keep other items, such as stuffed animals, pillows and books off of your blanket so that the heat is able to escape.

DON’T Run the Cord Between Anything

You should never run the cord in between your bed’s box spring or mattress. This is true even if you are going to be using the electric blanket while you are in bed. If you do, this may result in damage, or it could heat the cord up and possibly result in a fire.

DO Keep Your Pets Away from Your Electric Blanket

If you are going to be using your electric blanket, make sure that your pets don’t get too close. One sharp tooth or claw could puncture the insulation on the cord, or it could cause damage to the wires.

If you are planning to use an electric blanket this winter, it’s a good idea to follow the do’s and don’ts on this list. This will ensure that you remain warm and cozy, while still being safe. If you aren’t sure if your blanket is being used properly, then it’s a good idea to call the professionals for more information.
