Stop the DIY! Why You Need to Call an Electrician

Call Fusion ElectricDo It Yourself projects are booming right now in almost every industry because, who wouldn’t want to save a little cash on the side, right? But sometimes that little bit of cash you save doesn’t outweigh the cost of problems you might run into forgoing a professional. While building and painting a bookshelf might be a very doable DIY project, electrical work is a whole different story. Some smaller projects, like replacing your outlet plate are easy and cheap to do, it’s really better to leave most of the work up to a professionally licensed electrician who you can trust to get the job done right. Here are some reasons to pick up the phone and call Fusion Electric the next time you need electrical work done in your home.

Your Health Is More Important

According to Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) more than 30,000 non-fatal shock accidents occur every year. Realistically, that hospital bill will probably cost more than hiring a professional in the first place. So, we say, stop the DIY’s when it comes to your Kansas City area home’s electrical work.

You Could Cause More Problems

While you may be super handy and knowledgeable about home improvement, you’ll never be as well trained as a professional electrician. Many homeowners go into it with the best intentions and try to fix things around the house. We often get called in to correct the work of DIYers like loose wires and circuits, connecting the wrong wires, or overloading your electrical panel. These could all potentially cause a lot of damage if not fixed immediately.

Outlet Not Working? 3 Possible Reasons Why

Outlet not WorkingNon-working electrical outlets are a common problem homeowners run across, yet getting to the root of the problem can be troublesome. At Fusion Electric, we’ve found that many times the reason behind the problem is small and easily fixable. Before you call a trusted electrician, see if one of these three issues are the culprit.

A Power Surge Blew a Fuse to Your Circuit Breaker

Power surges are actually quite common, and much of the time can be harmless. But they can cause a little frenzy among your home’s electronics. A lot of times these power surges can disrupt the flow of electricity, causing your home’s circuit breaker to trip, shutting off power supply to some, or all of your home’s electrical outlets. You can check to see if this is the reason why your outlet isn’t working by checking other nearby outlets. If they too aren’t working, go check out your circuit breaker and flip the switch.

It’s a GFCI Outlet That’s Tripped

GFCIs, or ground fault circuit interrupters, are usually installed outside, near a water source, or where shock hazards are great. They are a safeguard against deadly electrical shocks. These act as a minicircuit breaker of sorts, shutting off power to the outlet when it senses an electrical imbalance. Try pressing the “reset” button on the outlet to restore power. If the “reset” button trips again every time that you press it, there may be a dangerous current leak somewhere on the circuit. In this case, it’s best to call an electrician for help.

You Have a Bad Connection

If none of the above have worked, try turning off your circuit breaker and removing the outlet from the box and looking for loose connections. Look for things like loose terminal screws, loose stab-in connections, and loose wires at wire connectors. You may find one or more of these when you remove your outlet and look in the electrical box. You may find a charred outlet or melted wire insulation that are a result of heat generated by the loose connection. Unfortunately these signs aren’t always there when a connection is loose, so we recommend double-checking the connections by gently bending each wire to see if it moves under the screw. If you find a loose connection, we recommend replacing the outlet with a new one to play it safe.

5 Electrical Add-Ons Homeowners Love Right Now

Homeowners are loving tricked out homes right now. With so much new technology available in the market, everyone wants the convenience and the cool factor. And we have to admit, some of these new gadgets are pretty impressive. Here are five of the most requested electrical add-ons we are seeing right now.

USB PortsBuilt-In Charging Stations

Everyone is connected in at least a dozen ways these days. From laptops, to smartphones, to tablets, to fitness trackers, to watches that do it all! And yet, all these devices need to be charged from time to time, and it can turn into World War III over who gets to use the USB outlet charger first before their phone battery dies. Many homeowners are solving this problem by installing built-in charging stations throughout their home. Whether it’s in a drawer, cabinet, or box, these charging docks or stations have several chargers for every device. If you’re knowledgeable about electricity, you can make a DIY version here

Home Movie TheaterProjector & Screen

Homeowners don’t always like the look of large television screens in the middle of their living room. It can be distracting. And having to build a cover of some sort can still be a pain. Now we are seeing many homeowners bypass television screens altogether in favor of a movie-style projector and drop-down screen. The projector technology is so advanced these days that the picture quality is nearly as amazing as an HD flatscreen, and a projector and drop-down screen are much more discreet.

Bluetooth Surround Speakers

So long large stereo speakers, goodbye boomboxes. There’s a new music entertainment system on the block. Surround Sound speakers have stepped up their game in recent years. No more connecting your smartphone to the speaker with a clunky adapter and wire, now you can connect via Bluetooth! Homeowners are having electricians install speakers around the home in a discreet manner, and then the Bluetooth allows them to connect, play any music they want, and in any room or rooms of their choosing, all from their phone!

LED LightsLED Lighting Systems with Dimming Capabilities

Homeowners are now opting to save money by ridding their homes of fluorescent light bulbs and making the switch to LED lighting systems. While sometimes it’s as simple as changing out a bulb, other times it takes a more advanced approach, such as dimming systems. Dimmers set up for traditional bulbs aren’t compatible with LED lights. It might seem like they are at first, but the dimming system will cause LED lights to burn out way too quickly. But you can install LED compatible dimming systems with the help of a licensed electrician in Kansas City.

Security High TechFingerprint Lock Systems

Security is even going high-tech these days. Now you can install locking systems in your home that don’t require a key, just your fingerprint. Never worry about someone stealing your keys again. All you need is YOU! You can program multiple family members prints to allow more access.

Patio Kitchens: 5 Electrical Items You Didn’t Think of Installing

Fusion Electric Outdoor PatioWhile you’ve probably already thought of where to place your Kansas City outdoor kitchen grill and which type of granite countertops to use, many homeowners overlook their electrical needs. It’s an easy oversight, but from our experience at Fusion Electric, it can end up being a costly one. You’ll later look back and realize all of the things that you missed, and it will either be costly to go back and fix, or it could be too late altogether. Here are five electrical items that you shouldn’t forget about when planning your outdoor patio kitchen addition.

Adequate Task and Ambient Lighting

Don’t forget to add enough lighting to your patio kitchen. It’s likely that you already know the type of overhead lighting you want, don’t forget about task lighting over your grill, and over parts of your countertops for after-dark cooking. And don’t forget about ambient lighting. Things like dimmers for your overhead lights, or even softer sconce lighting.

Heat Lamps

Another common oversight we see are the lack of heat lamps in outdoor patio plans. While these are definitely not necessary, they do make a nice added bonus. Even in the summer months, the temperatures can drastically cool off at night, and why not use your outdoor patio year-round? The addition of heat lamps make your outdoor patio kitchen functional at any time of the year. Grilling for all four seasons!

Installing Enough Outlets for All of Your Appliances

Another huge mistake we find in outdoor kitchens is the lack of GFCI protected outlets for all of your appliances. Think about that blender you would like to keep outside for margaritas, or that microwave so you can cook your entire meal in the same place. Those all require added outlets somewhere on your countertops. And it is very important that they are all GFCI protected since they are in an outdoor setting where water can easily disrupt their electric flow and cause harm to a person using them.

Ceiling Fans

Don’t forget to add those ceiling fans! It’s an outdoor kitchen, but that doesn’t mean that smoke and heat will ventilate all on its own. Ceiling fans will help keep your outdoor kitchen well ventilated, as well as keep your hangout area cool. These make a great addition to any covered outdoor living area.

Music System

Lastly, don’t forget about the music! While being outside with family and friends is entertaining enough, being able to listen to all of your favorite jams while you cook and eat together makes the experience more complete. It can help set the mood for whatever occasion you’re all together for. Having a music system installed in your outdoor kitchen patio makes for a much more enjoyable experience than having to blast your iPhone.
