You have likely heard about modern outlet options, such as smart outlets, but there are many different outlet options you can choose for your home. Each outlet is designed with certain applications in mind. This is why it’s a good idea to get to know the options that are available.
GFCI and AFCI Outlets
You probably have a few GFCI outlets in our home. These are typically used around water sources. A GFCI outlet is uniquely designed to turn off when a short circuit or ground fault is detected. This helps you avoid electrical fires, along with other issues.
It is now mandatory for these outlets to be installed in kitchens and bathrooms because of the appliances used in these areas, along with the water that’s nearby. However, a GFCI outlet can be installed in any part of your home if you prefer the way they work. Remember, though, these are typically more expensive than more traditional outlets.
AFCI outlets are similar to GFCI outlets. They operate in a similar manner. The arc fault circuit interrupter outlet protects from arcs of electricity that occur when electricity jumps from one wire and into another. If you have a home that was built after 1999, it’s likely that you have AFCI outlets in your home.
20A and Switched Outlets
A switched outlet is very similar to average light switches in your room. However, the switch on this outlet offers you the ability to quickly shut off the power to the outlet by flicking a switch. If you have smaller appliances plugged into an outlet, this outlet is beneficial if you don’t want to leave the device on while it’s plugged in. The 20A outlet is a type of outlet that’s designed for handling 20 total amps of electricity. This is higher than the typical 15 amps handled by most outlets. If you have high powered appliances, these are very beneficial.
Do you want a truly modern house? If so, installing a smart outlet is a good idea. This type of outlet can be controlled by your smartphone. With this installed, you have the power to switch the outlet off or on from any location – regardless of where you are in the world.
If you are thinking about having this type of outlet installed, it is likely you have a smart home automation hub present. If you don’t yet have this hub, you have to have it installed before you can use a smart outlet.
You likely have more than a few devices that require USB cords for charging. If this is the case, you can have an outlet installed with USB ports. These include traditional outlets along with USB outlets making charging your devices easier than ever before.
When it comes to outlets, there are more than a few options to choose from. If you are ready to have these installed, be sure to call an electrician. They can help you get the outlets you need and that they are installed properly.
