Lighting Considerations for a Bathroom Remodel

Table of Contents

Remodeling an area comes with many design considerations, including lighting considerations for a bathroom remodel. When planning the remodel, it’s critical to think about what kind of lighting you’re looking for and the overall feeling you want the lighting to give the space.

At Fusion Electric, we provide bathroom lighting for our customers across the Kansas City area.  In this guide, we discuss our top lighting considerations for a bathroom remodel and what will provide the most efficient, appealing, and functional lighting.

Types of Bathroom Lighting

When designing your remodel, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the different types of lighting available for your bathroom. Do you want ceiling lighting, pendant lights, vanity or mirror lights, LED strip lighting, wall sconces, chandeliers, or recessed lights? Are you looking for crisp, bright lights, warm, subtle lighting, or options for both? Are dimming features important to you?

What you decide will depend on your aesthetic and functional preferences. Many people choose to have several different types of lighting to serve different purposes in the bathroom. For example, dimmers are helpful for nighttime bathroom visits so your eyes don’t have to adjust to bright lights, or for relaxing baths when you only want a slight lighting effect.

Recessed lights are a great choice for hanging on the ceiling above the shower and toilet, while wall sconces and strips of mirror lights are great to hang at eye level between and along mirrors to eliminate shadows.

Vanity Lighting

Lighting around the mirror(s) in your bathroom is an often overlooked, but important feature to consider.  Many people choose to attach wall sconces or strips of mirror lights at or slightly above eye level alongside or in between mirrors for a clear, non-shadowy reflection.

Choosing color temperatures of 2,700K or 3,000K for your vanity lighting ensures you can comfortably and accurately see without casting a harshness on your reflection.

Lighting Above Tubs or Showers

If you have a separate tub and shower space, you may be able to choose a nice, recessed lighting fixture above your shower to help safely light up the space. With tubs, most building codes dictate that light fixtures must be at least 8 feet above the tub space, which excluded lighting directly above many tubs.

However, positioning a tub near or under a natural lighting source can be a great solution. Additionally, since most bathrooms are fairly small spaces, a well-positioned wall fixture across the room can illuminate your tub as well.

Night Lighting Considerations for a Bathroom Remodel

Since bathrooms can be used in the middle of the night, it’s important to consider adding lighting that can be adjusted to accommodate people when they wake up in the middle of the night. Being able to dim the main ceiling light in the bathroom can be a great way to allow a small amount of light for people to see without being way too bright.

You can also consider having one or two small night light plug-ins for your bathroom that kick on at night, allowing people to navigate the space without having to turn any bright lights on. The lights can be motion-activated or simply turned on before the household goes to sleep.

Aesthetic Lighting Considerations for a Bathroom Remodel

When you plan to light for your bathroom remodel, you’ll want to think about what the goal is for the overall look and feel of the space. This can determine whether you’ll want to use brighter or softer lighting, modern and sleek fixtures or warm and vintage fixtures, hanging or recessed lights, etc.

The lights should mesh well with the colors, tiles, textures, decorations, and other finishing details of the room. A thoughtfully remodeled bathroom will consider functionality, safety, and aesthetics when planning a light installation.
